Gul cancels speech to Serbian Parliament
Turkish President Abdullah Gul has canceled his scheduled speech to the Parliament of Serbia because some members of the parliament were planning to ask Gul questions about Turkey’s recognition of Serbia’s Kosovo province.
“It is incorrect for the Serbian parliament to host the Turkish president who accepts and recognizes independent Kosovo, said New Serbia parliamentary bloc leader Velimir Ilic.
Opposition leader Dragan Todorovic warned that Serbia needs to be particularly careful when dealing with Turkey.
“Turkey will do anything to re-conquer Ottoman Balkans, Ottoman Caucasus, Ottoman Middle East” said Todorovic alluding to the Turkey’s Islamic Ottoman Empire which many captive Christian states view as slavery.
Serbian media is abuzz about recent statements by the Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu who allegedly said that Turkey is actively working on reconquering the Balkans for itself.
Other representatives have characterized Turkey rapprochement as a positive in Serbian diplomacy.
“Turkey is today a modern democracy,” said representative Vladan Batic.
Serbian President Tadic, who hosts Gul, expressed optimism at the relationship and announced joint infrastructure projects.
“Turkish entrepreneurs are interested in infrastructure projects in Serbia,” Gul told reporters after meeting Serbian counterpart Boris Tadic.
A Serbian government source said Turkey was interested in taking part in the construction of two major highways.
During Gul’s visit, Serbian and Turkish ministers signed an accord on reconstruction of a 66 kilometer stretch of road between Novi Pazar and Tutin, Beta news agency reported.
Turkish banks would finance 85% of the project, while 15% would come from Serbia’s budget, the agency said, estimating the value of works at about $30 million.
