Serbia to choose Kosovo over EU, FM

Oct 3, 2009

Serbia will decline to join the EU if it is told that it must recognize the unilaterally declared independence Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian separatists made, says Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic.

“If the present Serbian government faced a decision like that, it would have no choice but to give up on EU integration,” said Jeremic to the audience of students and faculty of Political Science.

Jeremic said that the issue of Kosovo’ status and Serbia’s EU membership are separate but warned that some in the EU want to merge the two and force Serbia to either recognize Kosovo as a state or let go of EU hopes.

“If we are not active, but also careful and cautious, we can end up getting ourselves in an impossible situation, to choose between Kosovo and Metohija and Europe,” Jeremic said.

The Minister said that Serbia’s EU integration are one of the main foreign policy objectives but so is preservation of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

“If we get to the situation where we have to choose, then we have lost. But if we are in the losing situation, then we must choose Kosovo,” said Jeremic.

According to Serbia’s Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, Serbia’s membership in the EU would boost Serbia’s economic growth by 1.3% annually.

Serbia’s EU integration initiative, the SAA, is presently on hold because of the DUtch objections to Serbia’s inability to find and arrest General Ratko Mladic who is wanted by the war crimes court.

Hungary’s ambassador to Serbia, Imre Varga urged the EU nations to quickly ratify the SAA.

Serbia also got assurance from Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak that Slovakia does not recognize Kosovo and that nothing will change about its stand, because the government respects international legal principles.

In its latest session, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe did not discuss Kosovo’s status, reports the chief of Serbian delegation to the Council Dragoljub Micunovic.

“The question of status was not mentioned at all, because it is not within the competence of the Council of Europe, it is an issue for the International Court of Justice in the Hague,” Micunovic said.

He also pointed that a delegation of separatist ethnic Albanians met with Council of Europe’s Political Affairs Committee to debate institutional and legal issues in the province but the parliament was interested in the “catastrophic” human rights condition in Kosovo.

Serbs are almost attacked, killed or threatened almost daily by Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian separatists.

“They [separatists] talked about institutions, laws and what was adopted there, and the only topic we agreed to was the state of human rights in Kosovo,” Micunovic said.

Micunovic said that the issue of return of Serbs expelled by violent ethnic Albanians as well as justice and stability point to the lack of human rights in the province.

The ethnic Albanian separatists in Kosovo have declared independence last year after expelling hundreds of thousands of ethnic Serbs out of the province while the remaining ones live in fear and are protected by armed NATO troops.

Why would any Serb want to be in the EU when many of it’s members took part in the criminal and savage attack on the FRY and are still dictating to the Serbian people over Kosovo?

Joining the EU would be the biggest mistake ever!

The EU and Nato(both puppets of USA) along with their Albanian Allies (also American puppet)are the biggest threat to Serbia itself. They will attempt to control you by the same means they use now. That is you either do what THEY tell you or ELSE.Choice is yours Serbia keep your independence or sell souls to the DEVIL!

People are attacking Tadic for no reason. Why should he get involved militarily like Shalikashvili with Russia and get rocked, losing even what little Serbia has.

The prudent course of action is what he is doing: ride it out because time is on Serbia’s side.

Serbia have all ready lost kosovo it will be no chance of gettin it back now you can`t blame Americans or Europians for that you should blame Milosevic for that. The wise thing is to forget about kosovo and take the chance to join the EU as soon as possible best thing is to choose Europe becouse you can not keep on crying for something you allready lost
    best of luck!!

I believe Serbia would be a great addition to the EU. Nevertheless, Serbia should NOT be put in a position of either giving up Kosovo or joining the EU. That is a horrible option and a very delicate situation. Many countries of the ex-JU need to be given the chance and structural ‘guidance’ to become productive players once again. You can’t put people in a place of import to just lead Serbia into production, but need to train and evolve the economic side (which would of course be benefitted by joining the EU) and allow Serbia to become its OWN powerhouse on its own terms with structural guidance from other leading economic nations…

    draza.
collaborating with the NATO kangeroo court, hunting down serbian political and military leadership from the war time and giving them to the said court, groveling in front of the American Empire and the EU the same people who attacked the FRY and still occupy part of it,failing to protect serbs in Kosovo,is that enough reasons for you?

Dony, I have noticed that sometimes posts don’t go through especially if critisizing the present government too much.
Stive, I belive you are very wrong. Serbia has not lost Kosovo. Perhaps some parts are gone but there are areas that Albanians will never control and it was not Milosevic’s fault for Kosovo getting recognition from some countries. America always had this plan to divide Yugoslavia and rule over the small republics. Kosovo is a gold mine for the US and the only way to exploit it is to take it away from Serbia. No matter who was in power or what was done, Kosovo would always be ripped away from Serbia by force. They would’ve found some way to take it. It’s only temporary anyway and not all of it.

If I’ve seen anything about Serbia/Kosovo it is never over … seriously. The west thinks in terms of decades, you guys see this thing as a battle of centuries. In that context it is only time, no matter what. For now I would take an alliance with the west let them build factories for you, take the technology. In the next few decades Europe will be too worried about their own break away mini Islamic Republics ala Kosovo to worry about you. Gear up, drink be merry have lots of fun with your wife :-) , all technology can have dual uses, you’ll need an edge they way they breed down there.

Tadic I think he is more like a fox than he is given credit for. What apart from cars can you build in an auto factory? Nice to have NATO build it for you :-) .

I’m surprised that Tadic didn’t play traitor to the end.
He&friends must feel abandoned by the West…
The truth is Turks who are ALREADY in admission process for EU,
can NOT even hope to enter EU in 15-20 years(despite USA help)!
Only (N.A.Z.I.)Croatia will enter and the door will CLOSE !
When it comes time for Serbia to enter, the EU will NOT EXIST any more!
Tadic knows that, but many people don’t.
The Western civilization is in decline
The(N_A_Z_I) NATO will lose Afghan war and fall apart…
The EU (the way we know it today)will also fall apart and it will be created few new unions…
Catholic – new Roman Empire led by Germany(Vatican) and Nordic(protestant)Scandinavian Union.
USA will dwindle away from Europe (and world) leaving
    new perspectives for Eastern Europe.
God bless new Orthodox Byzantine Empire
    in liberated Constantinople.
There is confrontation with Islam and Western civilization coming closer.
Serbia always belonged to Byzantine civilization
that is where our roots are, that is where we should go.

What you are saying is very interesting. The first step in the process is happening right now with the pull out of NATO from Kosovo in order to salvage the situation in Afghanistan.
The EU and the USA now realize the blunder they made in supporting the siptari.
When the withdrawal is complete we will then “negotiate” with the siptari

Well said people!!! EU is the last thing Serbia needs…Serbia is a rich country( Vojvodinia can feed all Europe). The problem is the tratorous goverment in Serbia, with is makeing problems ( Serbia will eventually need, and must turn back into a monaracy!) Speaking about Kosovo & EU membership, well thats totally out of the question…never in a million years.
